For architect Ben Nicolas Hoffmann, the main focus of this project was to create a building that fits harmoniously into its surroundings and at the same time is the perfect place to live. As with previous joint projects, Faisan63, at Fasanenstr. 63, Townhouse Hugo at Knesebeckstr. 15, or House Saxonia, at Sächsische Str. 3 and 3a, SIGNUM is to fall in love with and has become so functional that you will never want to move out again. The complex offers living space on 6 floors plus a sheltered garden level. The building’s own spacious underground garage is accessible via a ramp. Of course, SIGNUM also meets its claim here – there is an infrastructure for charging columns where future-proof electric cars can be parked and charged.
The new building is situated in a spacious typical old Berlin courtyard – protected from street noise and commotion by the front building. Because of its bright clinker brick facade and large balconies, the house is a visual highlight. Floor-to-ceiling dark gray muntin windows form an intriguing contrast. They provide plenty of light to the inside and a touch of industrial charm to the outside – in reflection of the original courtyard, which was originally used for commercial purposes. Despite the southern exposure, there is always a shady spot in the lovingly designed courtyard, not least thanks to the tall trees. The courtyard’s open design and unobstructed view essentially gives it it’s idyllic character – a place you wouldn’t expect to find in the city center. The exterior blinds provide additional protection from the sun in each individual residential unit.
SIGNUM is impressive – on both a large and a very small scale. The new brick-built building offers 32 residential units, each with two to four rooms and living spaces ranging from 40 to 128 square meters. Most of the apartments are barrier-free and offer a wide range of features that leave nothing to be desired. This is ensured by an exquisite selection of customizable details: Here, only your taste counts – from the flooring to the bathroom fixtures to the window handles.
